Curriculum Information for Autumn 2018

 

Subjects


Literacy
We will study fantasy stories. During this we will identify, discuss and collect effective words and phrases which capture the reader’s interest and imagination. The children will also draw inferences around characters’ thoughts, feelings, actions and motives, and justify with evidence from the text using point and evidence. We will then move on to listen to, read and discuss a range of explanation texts. From this we will analyse and evaluate texts looking at language, structure and presentation.

Science
We will learn about electricity and its uses including, constructing a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts. Children will be using scientific language and will be taking part in experiments where they will be making observations and predictions.

Numeracy
We will be working on our understanding of place value. We will be recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number, identify the value of each digit to two decimal places and identifying, representing and estimating numbers using different representations, including the number line. We will also be developing our addition and subtraction skills using a range of methods. Additionally we will be looking at the properties of 2D shapes and visiting the topic of time. Throughout the term, all the children will continue to develop their times table skills up to x12 and also learn to apply these in a range of contexts.

Art/DT
This half term the children will draw/sketch products to help analyse and understand how products are made.

Music
Children will Improvise and compose music for a specific purpose.

They will produce a graphic score to illustrate the processes followed and represent this in a group percussion piece.

PE/Games
This half term we will beginning our swimming lessons. Children will be learning a range of important skills. Children will also be developing their invasion games skills.

ICT
The children will learn about coding. Children will be access online tools to support them.

RE
This children are going to be looking at aspects of the harvest and where our food comes from.

PSHE
New beginnings is the focus of our work in PSHE this half-term. Pupils will look at understanding emotions and feelings and begin to understand that sometimes we have difficult emotions and feelings to manage.

Homework

All homework is sent out on Friday and to be returned by the following Thursday.

New spellings and times tables are included in the homework. We will do timetables and spellings tests in class.

Additionally, children are expected to read for a minimum of 15 minutes each evening.

Primary Homework Guidelines

Year 1 & 2(Age 5-7)

  • Reading, spelling, other literacy work and number work  (1 hour a week)

Year 3 & 4(Age 7-9)

  • Literacy and numeracy work and occasional assignments in other subjects (1.5 hours a week)

Year 5 & 6  (Age 9-11)

  • Regular weekly schedule with continued emphasis on literacy and numeracy but also ranging widely over the curriculum (30 minutes a day)

How you can help

  • Please ensure your child has the appropriate PE kit in school every day.
  • Label all clothes clearly.
  • Ensure that your child does the set homework each week.
  • Monitor the amount of time your child spends reading
  • Support your child with tables and spellings
  • Speak to the class teacher if you have any concerns
  • Discuss your child’s learning targets
  • Encourage your child to take responsibility for their homework and learning.
