Curriculum Information for Autumn 2018

 

Subjects

LiteracyWe are going to be looking at stories with familiar settings, non-chronological reports and poems on a theme. The children will study a range of writing and text and eventually write their own.

ScienceOur main focus is going to be the changes across the four seasons. The children will also Observeand describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.

Numeracy

This half term the main topics that will be covered are number and place value, measurement including length and mass and addition and subtraction.

Art/DT
This half term the children will look at the work of a range of artists and create their own work using the techniques of the artists.

Geography
The children will be looking at a small area in the United Kingdom whilst looking at human and physical features of geography. They will also be looking at a range of maps.

History
During the half term the children will learn the difference between past and present and linking this to their own lives.

Music
The children will be learning that sound and music is used for different and specific purposes. They will also be using their voices expressively to sing and chant.

PE/Games
This half term the children will focus on underarm throwing and rolling. We will also be looking at the technique of running and hopping.

ICT
The children will learn about sounds on the computer and how sound files can be stored.

RE
The children are going to be looking at aspects of the harvest and where our food comes from.

PSHE
The children will begin to understand about being safe and how to talk to adults they trust when they don’t feel safe.

Homework

All homework is sent out on Friday and to be returned by the following Thursday.

New spellings and times tables are included in the homework. We will do timetables and spellings tests in class.

 Additionally, children are expected to read for a minimum of 15 minutes each evening.

Primary Homework Guidelines

Year 1 & 2(Age 5-7)

  • Reading, spelling, other literacy work and number work  (1 hour a week)

Year 3 & 4(Age 7-9)

  • Literacy and numeracy work and occasional assignments in other subjects (1.5 hours a week)

Year 5 & 6  (Age 9-11)

  • Regular weekly schedule with continued emphasis on literacy and numeracy but also ranging widely over the curriculum (30 minutes a day)

How you can help

  • Please ensure your child has the appropriate PE kit in school every day.
  • Label all clothes clearly.
  • Ensure that your child does the set homework each week.
  • Monitor the amount of time your child spends reading
  • Support your child with tables and spellings
  • Speak to the class teacher if you have any concerns
  • Discuss your child’s learning targets
  • Encourage your child to take responsibility for their homework and learning.
