Curriculum Information for Autumn 2018
Subjects
Literacy
This term our writing will be based around an adventure novel: ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell.
There will be a focus on ambitious vocabulary and accurate spelling. The children will learn to identify and use grammatical structures including expanded noun phrases and relative clauses.
There will be a continued emphasis on reading stamina and comprehension.
Science
The children will be studying Evolution and inheritance.
They will learn about fossils and about how living things have changed over time. They will also identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment.
Numeracy
The children will be focusing on Place Value, Number and the four operations.
There will be an emphasis on the quick recall of times tables, addition and subtraction facts, and efficient mental strategies as these underpin all areas of mathematics.
French
We will be revising greetings, families and animals.
Art/DT
We will be exploring the theme of camouflage within the natural world. The children will develop their drawing skills and will be given the opportunity to work digitally.
Geography
The children will be gaining Locational Knowledge of the World, learning about where countries and continents are, including the latitude and longitude and position in relation to the equator. The children will also learn to describe and understand key aspects of physical and human geography.
Music
The children will be learning how to compose a piece of music based around their learning in English.
PE/Games
This half term we are learning skills for invasion games.
ICT
The children will be learning how to manipulate images using a paint package.
RE
‘How and Why do Christians read the Bible?’
Homework
NOTE: Weekly (sent out Friday, expected in the following Thursday) or Daily.
Maths
- Mathletics task (weekly)
- Arithmetic calculations (Daily)
Spellings
- Five new spellings and a strategy (weekly)
Reading
- Children will be expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes. (Daily)
English/Topic
- A different task each week; either writing, research or comprehension.(Weekly – Each task to be presented neatly in their homework book)
Primary Homework Guidelines
Year 1 & 2(Age 5-7)
- Reading, spelling, other literacy work and number work (1 hour a week)
Year 3 & 4(Age 7-9)
- Literacy and numeracy work and occasional assignments in other subjects (1.5 hours a week)
Year 5 & 6 (Age 9-11)
- Regular weekly schedule with continued emphasis on literacy and numeracy but also ranging widely over the curriculum (30 minutes a day)
How you can help
- Please ensure your child has the appropriate PE kit in school every day.
- Label all clothes clearly.
- Ensure that your child does the set homework each week.
- Monitor the amount of time your child spends reading
- Support your child with tables and spellings
- Speak to the class teacher if you have any concerns
- Discuss your child’s learning targets
- Encourage your child to take responsibility for their homework and learning.
