It has been a wonderful first week back in school. The children have settled well in their new classes and appear to be very happy around school.
Well done to all the creative and artistic parents who created the incredible float for this year’s coffee feast. We are delighted that as well as enabling the children at school to have fun on the day the float was announced as a winner.
We are very proud of the new Coffee Feast Queen, Twiga who left us in the summer. We know that Twiga and her retinue will carry out their duties with pride and enthusiasm. Thank you to the parents who have sent Photos in they will be on the website soon.

Please continue to pray for Father Andy who is dealing with his illness with typical stoicism. We miss his presence on a Monday in church. We are very grateful to Mrs Sandra Carter who opens and closes church for us every week. Without Mrs Carter we would not be able to use the church.
The cross created by Mr Hetherington is looking fantastic and as though it has been there for years. Huge thanks to Mr Hetherington!
We know Mr Phillpotts does not like being publicly thanked for all he does in school, but the staff are incredibly grateful to him for all the days he gave up in the summer to help us ensure the classrooms are the best they can be. Thank you, Mr Phillpotts!
The children in Y5 and 6 had a very challenging day learning to survive in different environments and participated in the challenge with enthusiasm. It was a pleasure to observe them develop thinking skills, team work and resilience.
Power of Words
The whole school engaged in a busy and enjoyable day finding out about words. The children typically immersed themselves in a day of fun word related games and lessons.

Mr Smith is unfortunately unwell and absent from work. We wish him a speedy recovery. Please bear with us if at times gates aren’t opened on time. Massive thanks to Mr Green for stepping in to do the essential cleaning.
Please remember swimming starts for Y3/4 on Friday. Earrings cannot be worn at the pool so please teach your children how to remove them. We are not allowed to take earrings out for children.
PE and plasters
We have made enquiries about PE and plasters. Plasters are not suitable to cover earrings so once again please teach your children to remove their earrings before each PE lesson.
Borwick Day Visit
Please ensure payment for the Borwick trip is paid as soon as possible. If we do not receive enough money to cover the trip we will have to cancel it. Payment needs to be in by 13th September please.
Parents’ Evenings take place on 25th and 26th September. Further information will follow.
Harvest Festival will take place on Sunday 7 October at St John the Baptist church. The children will be taking a very active role in the service. Gifts of fresh fruit and vegetables or tinned produce will be received during the service by our Coffee Feast Queen.
The service will be led by Rev Coral and will be a short family service (no communion) with refreshments such as sandwiches and cakes to be purchased afterwards.
Please remember to book an appointment with your child’s class teacher to discuss targets if they currently have an IEP (Individual Education Plan).
The PTFA is a vital part of school life and we are indebted to them for all that they do. Our new Chair, Cath has written a letter at the end of the newsletter.
After School Club and Breakfast Club
Please remember that places must be booked and paid for in advance. Demand is high for spaces this year and ad hoc bookings are unlikely to be accommodated. All bookings must go through Mrs Thornton only. She can be emailed at school.

Y6 Pupil Responsibilities
Y6 children have been asked to consider applying for the following positions:
Head Sports Boy
Head Sports Girl
The Y6 children will be asked to complete an application form if they wish to be considered for any of the above roles. They will then be given an application form and later in the week be interviewed by a group of no more than two adults. Any children who are prepared to apply for a role will automatically become a member of the Y6 Council regardless of whether they are successful in their application. The elected Y6 Council, Head Girl, Head Boy, Head Sports Boy and Head Sportsgirl will meet with Mrs Wigley and Mrs Astbury on a regular basis.
School Council and Eco Warriors
The children will vote in class for their year group School Councillors and a class Eco Warrior on Monday.
One child from each year group will be chosen for the School Council. Children who wish to be considered will also make a short presentation to their classmates on Monday morning and a secret ballot will take place. The School Council will meet with Miss Phillips on a regular basis.
One child from Oak, Beech and Cedar will be elected to be their class Eco Warrior. Alongside the Eco Captain the Eco warriors will meet with Mr Marr to discuss Eco issues on a regular basis.

Pupil Data Forms
All children will be bringing home their Pupil Data form. Please make sure you thoroughly check the details and return the form to the office by the 14thSeptember.
Pumps and trainers are both acceptable in school however we do suggest that trainers are more appropriate for outdoor activities.
Clubs start the week beginning 17th September and last for 5 weeks. Please note that all clubs finish at 4.15pm.

We would like to clarify the importance of not sending any nut-related products into school (nutella, sweets etc). We have children in school who could have a fatal reaction to contact with nuts and feel that this is not an unreasonable request.

Welcome back to St. John’s! I hope your children returned relaxed & eager, and have settled back well. To all our new starters – welcome to our friendly school, where I’m sure you’ll make many happy memories!
I’d like to introduce you to our Association, of which you are ALL automatically members. I am the new Chairperson, Cath Wilson, being new to this role after 3years as Treasurer. Our 4 committee members are Michelle Doyle, Emma Critchley, Alison Walmsley & Micaela Parker. There are also a core group of parents who provide much assistance. We all volunteer our time to provide our school with funds for ‘extras’ such as subsidised trips, equipment (eg, laptops), and fun activities such as Drama Days. We do this by hosting events such as Christmas/ Summer Fairs, Bingo & Discos. We, also, raise funds through a lottery. Please look up www.yourschoollottery.co.ukand search for Pilling.
We always need volunteers & supporters. We’re a friendly bunch, and you won’t be pushed into doing more than you want to! Please come along to our informal meeting & AGM on Monday 1stOctober after the church service, in the school hall. Our first event this year, on 11thOctober, will be an 80’s themed children’s Disco, hosted by a local DJ. Fancy dress encouraged (but please don’t feel obliged to over-spend)! More details to be announced.
